Singapore is becoming something of a tennis hub.
The cosmopolitan, thriving Asian cultural and business centre of more than five million people was announced as the venue for the prestigious season-ending WTA Championships from 2014 to 2018, and recently became the home of a new Tennis Australia Asia-Pacific office.
And now, it has played host to the Australian Open trophies.
“Daphne” and “Norm” stopped off on a four-day visit to Singapore as part of the Australian Open 2014 International Trophy Tour, where they wined, dined, went on television and enjoyed some sigh-seeing.
The trophies stopped off in Singapore’s Lacoste store; with Lacoste an Australian Open sponsor, this was the first of several visits to Lacoste stores around Asia during the tour. Lacoste is also running a competition that sees customers who spend more than $150 in their stores go into a draw to win Australian Open finals tickets.
The trophy tour’s first official dinner was also held in Singapore; 30 of the city’s biggest sporting brands and agencies, as well as existing and potential sponsors, converged to learn more about the Australian Open and it’s role and presence in the Asia/Pacific region.
With the formalities out of the way, it was time for some sight-seeing. Daphne and Norm took part in a photo shoot at several iconic sights around Singapore, including Merlion Park, Marina Bay Sands resort (pictured) and Gardens by the Bay.
And to top off their visit, the trophies made TV appearances at Singapore’s Fox Studios on Fox Sports Central and Score Tonight.
Next stop: Beijing.
