Rod Laver Shanghai

Australian tennis legend Rod Laver added a dose of star power to the Australian Open International Trophy Tour as it arrived in Shanghai.

And Laver was reunited with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup – a trophy he hoisted in 1960, 1962 and 1969 – when the stunning silver cup arrived at the prestigious ATP Shanghai Rolex Masters tournament.

“Norm” almost didn’t make it; wild weather had been lashing the each coast of China, the result of a typhoon. But he arrived just in time for his appearance at the The Rolex Experience, an exhibition of Rolex's finest ambassadors – including Laver – and brands held at their store on Shanghai’s famous Bund.

After spending the day at the exhibition, Norm and Laver where ushered to the Rolex Suite at Shanghai’s Qizhong Stadium. And there, champion and trophy sat, taking in the sizzling tennis action, posing for photos and conducting interviews at one of the world’s biggest tennis events outside the Grand Slams.

As Laver continued his raft of media and sponsor appearances as part of his first ever visit to China – he appeared at an ANZ clinic and made the days of several juniors and ANZ VIPs who were lucky enough to have a hit with him – Norm and “Daphne” (the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup) went off on their own adventure.

The trophies visited Lacoste’s flagship store in Shanghai for two days, giving staff and customers the chance to enjoy an up-close experience with some of the sporting world’s most prestigious silverware.

And following a stunning final dinner in Shanghai, they were off, bound for Guangzhou.
